Prof le Roux, Head of Pathology at University College Dublin, works within the Diabetes Complications Research Centre. As one of the most eminent bariatric physicians in the world, he has teamed up with Prof David Kerrigan of Phoenix Health to promote bariatric surgery in Ireland as an effective treatment not just for obesity, but also for type 2 diabetes.
After an initial assessment by Prof le Roux at his MedFit clinic in Blackrock, suitable patients will be counselled about bariatric surgery, then treated at our private in-patient unit in Belfast by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, dieticians and psychologists, before returning to close aftercare with Prof le Roux’s team back in Dublin.
VHI, Aviva and Laya do not currently cover the cost of bariatric surgery with Phoenix Health in Belfast, but payment can be accepted in Euros – click here for further details.

The BoB procedure is used to treat weight regain after failed gastric bypass. It involves placing a conventional gastric band around the mid-portion of the over-stretched stomach pouch. This shrinks its capacity and slows down the rate at which it empties.
The intragastric balloon is considered to be a more minor procedure, as it is not as invasive and can be carried out under sedation.
Working with Prof Carel le Roux of UCD, Phoenix Health offers Irish patients seeking bariatric surgery initial assessment and post-op aftercare in Dublin, with surgery at our main Irish surgical centre in Belfast, just a few hours drive away.
